Choosing The Proper Sized OdorXit® CLO2 for Your Job
OdorXit® CLO2 is a highly effective odor eliminator
that uses chlorine dioxide gas as the odor control agent. Make no mistake about
this product, used properly (as defined and described on this web site) it
is safe and extremely effective at eliminating a wide range of very difficult
to treat odors.
Used improperly, chlorine dioxide can bleach the material the packet is laying
on, and cause respiratory distress in humans and pets. If the inner packet
is opened, the material inside (sodium chlorite) can cause burns or skin irritation.
NEVER OPEN THE WHITE TYVEC PACKET!
OdorXit® CLO2 is offered in severalsizes and 2 speed versions.
The Slow Release and Quick Release versions of the product produce the
same amount of CLO2 gas, but the Extended version does
it for 20 to 30 days. The Quick Release version produced the same among of
gas in 20 to 30 hours.
Why the are we offering 2 versions of OdorXit® CLO2?
There are many cases where the contamination
is so high and/or the available time to remove the odor is so limited the the
Quick Release version is required to meet the users needs. We have found that
even very high levels of surface mold respond extremely well to the Quick Release
version especially when the air in the area being treated is stirred by a small
fan. The down side to the Quick Release version is that it often produces concentrations
of chlorine dioxide that exceed the 3 minute exposure limit considered to be
toxic to humans and pets.
The Slow Release version
The OdorXit® CLO2 Slow Release versions are available
in 5, 10, 25 and 50 gram packages. They produce small amounts of chlorine
dioxide for 20 to 30 days (depending on the relative humidity in the area of
treatment). The release rate can be accelerated by adding a very small amount
(a few drops) to the mounting pouch or laying the Tyvek packet on a wet paper
towel. Adding water can reduce the maximum release time to as little as 10
days.
Even at very low dose levels as produced by the extended release versions
of the product when used in the appropriate sized area (.01 PPM (parts per
million of air)) kills mold fungus and spores, and most types of bacteria found
in our homes, cars, and work places.

The Quick Release version
The OdorXit® CLO2 Quick Release versions are available
only in 15 and 25 gram packages. They produce the same amounts of chlorine
dioxide in 20 to 30 hours as the Extended Release product does in 20 to 30
days (again depending on the relative humidity in the area of treatment).
The Quick Release version can produce concentrations as high a 10 PPM in small
tightly closed areas like a cabinet, closet, small room, car or truck for several
hours.
The concentration
drops quickly as the CLO2 does its job of eliminating the odor sources in the
area. However, it is not safe to breath CLO2 at this level of concentration.
Therefore, the treated area must be flushed with fresh air for 5 to 30 minutes
before the area is occupied for more than a few seconds. IE open the exterior
doors on a house or a window on a single closed room, or open the doors on
a car or truck.
The OdorXit® CLO2 Quick Release version
of the product is capable of treating enclosed areas like a car in as little
as an hour and a room or house sized area in less than one day. The
release rate can be accelerated by adding a very small amount (a few drops)
to the mounting pouch or laying the Tyvek packet on a wet paper towel. Adding
water can reduce the maximum release time to as little as 10 to 12 hours and
produce toxic levels of CLO2 in tightly closed and confined
spaces as big as a house.
This neatly packaged product is not a toy, and should
be given considerable respect. It is truly the big gun of odor control and
it is a powerful biocide capable of killing bacteria and viruses very quickly.
It should be used with caution!

Appropriate sizing of OdorXit® CLO2 for the job
OdorXit® CLO2 products use a contact chemistry method of removing odors at
their source. This means that the chlorine dioxide gas must come in direct
contact with the material causing the odor and the material causing the odor
must be able to be oxidized. Odor sources that readily respond or oxidize include
smoke, bacteria, viruses, mold, fungus, spores, animal scent spray to name
a few. Odor sources that do not respond include urine (urea) salt, many solvents,
and odor coming from inside walls.
Odor sources that can be washed away like fungus and thick smoke residue should
be washed away before using OdorXit® CLO2 to reduce the amount of material to
be oxidized.
Finally, quoting the number so square feet of floor space a packet will work
on is convenient but very inaccurate. It does work OK for an empty room, but...the
real measure is the amount of surface area in the area being treated. As an
example, carpet has 4 to10 time the surface area of wood flooring, draperies
and blinds have 2 to 5 time the surface area of drywall, furniture has 3 to
8 times the surface area of the floor space it occupies. The point is;
a furnished 100 square foot room that normally has about 440 square feet
of surface area including the walls and ceiling could have as much as 2 to
10 times the surface area when the furnishings are included.
How does the affect you? Most rooms with a musty (moldy) odor will respond
to treatment with OdorXit® CLO2 in a few days using the highly inaccurate
floor space measurement to determine packet size and a ceiling fan or small
personal fan to stir the CLO2 into the air. If the room is furnished with lots
of stuff, it may take up to 10 or 20 days to complete the job. Since the Slow
Release version on the product produces usable amounts of CLO2 for 20 to 30
days, this is not a problem. However, using the Fast Release version, even
though it produces 20 to 30 times as much CLO2 it does so for just 1 day and
you have just 1 day to get the sufficient quantities of CLO2 to all the places
that need treatment.
The 5 gram Slow Release version has a maximum
effective usage area is about 500 square feet of floor space and is intended
to be used to remove mold, tobacco smoke, burned food odor, and body or shoe
odor in areas as small as a gym locker or bag, roll top desk, chest of drawers,
clothing storage bin, tool bag/box, or as big as a car, truck, closet or bathroom
room
The 10 gram Slow Release version has an effective usage
area of about 1000 square feet, and is intended to be used
for mold infestations, tobacco smoke fire smoke,
removing skunk odors from you home, car, office or truck. The area can be
inhabited by both pets or humans during use. If a prominent bleach smell develops,
treatment should be discontinued by removing the packet.
The 15 gram Quick Release version has an effective usage area
of about 1000 square feet, and is intended to be used for
very heavy mold infestations, tobacco smoke fire smoke,
removing skunk odors, and for heavily contaminated vehicles. The area being treated
must not be inhabited by pets or humans during the first 24 hours of use. .
The 25 gram Slow Release version has an effective
usage area is 1000 to 2000 square feet, and
is intended to remove the odor tobacco and fire smoke, and to kill mold fungus
mold spores, bacteria and viruses. It is safe as long as there is not a prominent
bleach smell present. Though a normal basement under a average sized house is
500 to 2000 square feet, this size packet is almost always big enough to do the
job in 2 to 10 days if the basement is empty of trash, wet clothes and wet boxes
of stuff.
The 25 gram Quick Release version has an effective usage area
is 1000 to 2000 square feet.and is intended to be use removing
skunk odors, very heavy mold infestations, tobacco smoke fire smoke, and for
very heavily contaminated vehicles. The area being treated must not be inhabited
by pets or humans during the first 24 hours of use.
The 50 gram Slow Release version has an effective usage
areas is about 4000 square feet of closed space, or a large poorly sealed garbage
dumpster. It is intended for removing garbage odors, mold, mildew and smoke
odor from large open spaces with good air circulation. Since chlorine dioxide
is heaver than air, if the air is not moved around by a fan, the chlorine dioxide
will simply sit on the floor. It also performs very well in garbage dumpster
used by restaurants and apartment complexes for garbage disposal.
Us a small fan. The effectiveness of any sized ClO2 packet
can be materially improved by using a small fan (relative to the size of the
area being treated) to stir the air in the area being treated. Larger areas require
the use of a fan to effectively treat the area. As an example, a 4 inch electric
or battery operated fan works well in a car or bathroom. A 7 inch oscillating
fan works well in a bed room or family room. A 12 to 24 inch fan (on low) works
well in a basement or crawl space. Ceiling fans, if available, work very will
when set on the slowest speed.
Caution. Used improperly,
- Chlorine dioxide can bleach the material the packet
is laying on. Use the clear plastic pouch provided.
- Using the Fast Release packet or a Slow release packet that is too big
can cause respiratory distress in humans and pets. If you experience difficulty
breathing avoid the area being treated or remove the CLO2 packet to a well
ventilated area.
- If the inner packet is
opened, the material inside (sodium chlorite) can cause burns or skin irritation.
NEVER OPEN THE WHITE TYVEC PACKET!
Carefully read and follow the instructions! It
is really important. These small packets unopened are very safe and easy to use,
but they are in fact the big guns of odor control and disserve considerable respect.
