Urine Odors
Understanding the ProblemAs urine dries and
decomposes it goes through several transformations.
- In the first stage ureic acid produces a gas that smells like ammonia and urea salt (urea salt
that has no odor when it is dry). Once all the water has evaporated, any living
organisms die for lack of a hospitable environment in which to live.
- In the second stage, further decomposition occurs when the urea salt is exposed to water (or water vapor)
and materials containing hydrogen and sulfur, (dust mite bodies, dirt, etc.). This
combination produces mercaptan gas (the same basic stuff they put in
propane and natural gas to alert you to a gas leak) that smell really bad.
OdorXit works on both stages to permanently block the production of the
undesirable gasses provided that OdorXit comes in direct contact with the
offending materials.
Saving Wood Flooring
Getting OdorXit to the offending
materials when the urine has soaked into wood flooring, or run in between the hardwood floor boards,
or run under a wall is easy with OdorXit. OdorXit diluted 1 part OdorXit, 30
parts water will normally penetrate to the same areas as the urine in most
cases.

Treating Severe and Long Term Contamination
In cases
where very deep penetration has occurred through the carpet and into the
flooring or concrete, over a long period time and repeated contamination,
a more aggressive treatment (occasionally including some wood replacement) is required.
Mixing OdorXit with carpet cleaning products containing surfactants will accelerate OdorXit's penetration
into the carpet fibers, backing, wood flooring, sub-flooring and concrete.
Liquid urine has
a low surface tension, which helps it soak into porous materials and
cracks quickly and deeply. Mixing carpet cleaning products containing surfactants with
OdorXit will accelerate its penetration significantly. Care needs to be taken when
treating hardwood flooring with surfactants because the boards may warp or cup
if too much liquid is applied too quickly.
Using Detergents with OdorXit
OdorXit is not effected by detergent residue or even by
mixing OdorXit with detergent or other
non-oxydizing cleaning products.
Chlorine and oxygen bleaches however, while in their liquid form, will
neutralize OdorXit and cause it to not eliminate urine
odors.. If you have used bleach on the area you are treating, just
let the bleach dry completely before using OdorXit.
OdorXit's compatibility with detergent makes it very
affective at neutralizing urine odor after other methods have been tried and failed on
wall to wall carpet,
oriental carpet,
concrete,
fabric and clothing,
leather
and bedding. Normally, removing the residue from
other products is not necessary for OdorXit to be successful, but there are
always extreme cases (especially with
carpet ) where so much "stuff" has been
used that it may be necessary to remove as much of that residue as possible
before using OdorXit.
Treating
machine washable fabric
contaminated with urine is very easy and effective.
Painted and "Sealed" Surfaces If wood or concrete flooring has been painted, refinished,
and or sealed in an
attempt to "seal in" an odor, OdorXit Concentrate, which is a liquid and requires
direct contact with the source of the odor, will not be able to get to where the odor is
being produced without using some very aggressive techniques.
Using OdorXit Magic on "Sealed Surfaces" is very effective because it is
absorbing the gas produced and does not need to come in contact with the source.
It does, however, require occasionally reapplication.
Some OdorXit Concentrate users
have been successful treating hardwood flooring that has been painted and/or sealed
by drilling small holes between the boards and injecting OdorXit solution into
areas between and under the contaminated boards. Unfortunately, this method is
not applicable to plywood, OSB or concrete but we have others methods that
are effective. For more information on these methods, Call our toll free help line
